Last weekend, we got to do what’s quickly become our favorite thing: spend time on the beach with Surfers Healing. We headed to Sunny Isles for not one, but two ‘perfect days.’ Families came from all over Florida, and even crossed state lines, to be part of the magic. Three-hundred kids on the autism spectrum were able to have the experience of a lifetime.
During the opening ceremony, Izzy addressed the autism ohana with his son Isaiah by his side. He said, “Autism can be hard, and there are bad days for all of us, but today will not be one of them. We look forward to seeing all of these beautiful children and hope that they’ll be able to take the joy of this day with them all year-round.”
A DJ spun tracks all day to keep kids and families grooving. Our boards made their maiden voyage, and you could see the ‘Fruity Fruity Bang Bang’ and ‘In Queso Fire’ designs slice the waves with both the surfer and kid grinning ear-to-ear.
Moshe Banin, the Camp’s coordinator, said, “A lot of kids we fight to get onto the board, and all of them come back happy. No one’s judged, and it’s also a great day to let families realize that you can really push the bar with their kids.”
A remarkable healing experience for all, it’s something we hope to share with more and more families as our partnership grows. Many are already full, but you can still register for some camps with Surfers Healing.
If you would like to support Surfers Healing, you can use code SURFER when you order popcorn, and 50% of your purchase will go toward helping them continue to provide these incredible camps free to kids with autism.
